New research reveals that dyslexics are incapable of effectively performing to the same levels as standard readers. So much so that they are now believed to be wholly incapable of holding high level jobs in both industry and government.


This news will be a severe blow to our new presidents administration and the movement of mainstreaming dyslexics in schools and will likely require increased government funding to keep what will sure to be a new influx of working poor dyslexics from having their homes foreclosed upon, in what is the worst real estate market in a generation. Retraining for more kinesthetic jobs, like construction and manufacturing, which they are still seen as capable of, will also be a necessity

Now let's stop this made up nonsense about dyslexics and appreciate the point I want to illustrate. Our beliefs dictate our reality.

This is critical, because if you're not satisfied with what you're accomplishing in your life, you need to look no further than your beliefs. Here's why...
  • If you believed that dyslexia was a severe disadvantage in the workplace, what would your expectations be of yourself if you were a dyslexic?
  • If you believed you could lose your shirt if you started a business, do you think you'd start one?
  • If you believed you'd be devestated if you boyfriend broke up with you, how desperate and clingy might you be in the relationship? What would be the likely result?
  • If you believed, maybe because of direct observation of those close to you, that Cancer was a death sentence, what do you think would be the result for you if you came down with it?
Beliefs are nothing more than stories we tell ourselves. Stories that we made up, more often than not, for totally justifiable reasons, but we still made them up. When you can drop the story and just accept the truth of what is you'll see your self-inflicted limits expand and joy come back into your life.

Increase Your Twitter Following: The @KevinRose Experiment

Compared to Twitter royalty like @KevinRoseww , @LeoLaporte, @GuyKawasaki and @JasonCalacanis, who each have over 50,000 followers, my hard earned 415 followers @LarryGenkin is paltry and peasantly.

But maybe there's still hope. Kevin Rose had a great guest post on TechCrunch yesterday, offering "10 Ways to Increase Your Twitter Followers." I'm going to take suggestion #7 and do a live experiment here to see if it can maybe work for me. Here's what Kevin wrote...

87 Year Old Who Obviously Doesn't Know This is Impossible

How to Get an Appointment With Anyone -- Including the CEO

Everybody knows that it's more effective to sell "top — down" than "bottom — up." The real question is, when you're in sales, how do you get the people at the top to WANT to meet with you.


Here's a very effective technique that worked like a charm for me back in the early days of my career when I was still "wet behind the ears" selling magazine advertising. I call it "The Vest Pocket Research Technique", here's how it works:

Step #1: Select your sales target

Step #2: Get the contact info of 20 prospects for your sales target

Step #3: Create a short survey. The goal is to ask questions that will provide interesting thought provoking results. Here are some sample questions I would ask.
  • When you think of ___ (category of product/service of your target) who is the first vendor that comes to mind?
  • What other vendors can you name?
  • Who does the best work in ___ (category of product/service of your target)? Why?
  • Who does the worst work ___ (category of product/service of your target)? Why?
  • What are the most important factors when you make a decision to purchase ___ (category of product/service of your target)? Why?
  • If you could give vendors in ____ (category of product/service of your target) a piece of advice what would it be?
  • Do you have any plans to buy ____? If so when? How much do you anticipate you will you spend?
Step #4: Call the contacts from Step #2 and conduct the survey. Have it take no more than 3-4 minutes. Get 10 completed surveys.

Step #5: Call the CEO or Sr. exec you want to meet with.  Explain that you have some market research about their company that,  while not scientific, is very instructive. Give some of the highlights and close for the appointment, like so:
"Mr. Shapiro, this research produced some very interesting results. What I learned during these calls included:  What companies in your sector had top of mind awareness, who is perceived as doing the best (and worst) work and the buying factors that are most important to them when making a purchasing decision for ___. And, I've even got the names of people who've told me they're going to be buying ___ in the very near future and how much they have budgeted to spend. When would be a good time for us to set up a meeting for me to share my results."
Not only has this gotten me meetings with CEO's when I was a jr. sales rep, but I've walked into these meetings to find the CEO and 4 of his staff with them waiting, with notepads, to hear my research. 

It's a relatively quick way to completely change your relationship with a client/prospect. One second you're a peddler, then next your valuable business partner.  And, when you have that kind of relationship, when it comes time for them to buy your category of product/service,  who do you think they're going to be most inclined to buy from?

How to Become a Sought After Industry Thought Leader in Just 6 Months

I've been thrown a big challenge.

Nate Kievman, CEO of Business Success Unlimited, heard me speak at marketing guru Jay Abraham's Super Reunion this past April on the topic of the Thought Leadership Marketing methodology I had developed. That speech was the first time that I had ever publicly shared any portion of the private marketing work I had been doing over the previous decade with some of the largest companies in the world.


Nate, like Jay Abraham and the companies I've worked for, could see the power behind this new method of marketing. (When an individual or organization is elevated to become Thought Leaders of an industry, it brings them ever more business/career advancements, more quickly, for better remuneration — and simultaneously presents competitors with a unique differentiator that they cannot easily combat or silence.)

Having proven it with over 50 of the Fortune 500, there was no doubt Thought Leadership Marketing works. The problem, according to Nate, is that it takes too long. (for those not using my methods it takes the better part of a career to become seen as an expert and Thought Leader.)

By 2002 I was usually able to make this happen within about 3 years. While not exactly like snapping your fingers, it was easy enough to see the rapidly improving financial results as you're "on the path."

This past spring, given the serious economic challenges we were going through, Nate challenged me. He said "I'd be willing to bet that if you were to really, REALLY put your mind to it, you could figure out a way to get the results for people to be realized even faster. People need this and you need to figure it out."

For the past 8 months, his voice has been stuck in my brain like an old fashioned LP with a scratch that makes it repeat over and over. But, he was right.

Because of Nate's challenge I've rethought my entire Thought Leadership Marketing approach, and now believe I can take anyone who is willing to work diligently and follow my directions and make them into Thought Leader in their industry within 6 months.
