Hurting Industries, Like Newspapers, Should Learn From Google's Real Brilliance

The newspaper industry is dying a death of 1000 cuts. They're bleeding out right before our very eyes.

Advertising dollars are migrating away from print to online, however newspapers online revenues are not growing fast enough to offset the losses they're incurring in print advertising. In fact, they're not even growing at all.

A recent story in the New York Times highlighted that while online advertising grew 7.6% in the second quarter, newspaper's online revenues are down 2.4%.

The result: massive layoffs and a lot of head scratching.

Newspapers, and other companies, need to start stealing shamelessly from Google's "playbook." Contrary to popular belief Google's real brilliance has nothing to do with search or advertising on Google.com. Google's genius is their business model. Specifically, their ability to co-opt thousands upon thousands of websites THAT THEY DON'T OWN, to generate revenue for them.

Google makes a lot of money from Google.com, no doubt. However, the money they make from the Google ads that are displayed ubiquotously on websites across the Internet, dwarfs the revenue from the websites they own or that are directly under their control.

Businesses in general, and newspapers in specific, need to open up their eyes and figure out how to increase  sales from working together with partners....even if you don't own one single share of stock in the companies you partner with. Ownership is nice, profits are nicer.

The world is changing very rapidly, as executives so must our business models.

    Hi,
There is also the opportunity to sell other services. Since much of the work involves de-cluttering a home and creating market pleasing effects, there is the opportunity to also charge for junk-hauling, color consultations, move arranging etc.

The initialism "SEO" can also refer to "search engine optimizers", terms adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house.
