I'm a Republican -- And Today's a Great Day

My party lost, but strangely I'm feeling really good about things. Here's a few reasons why:

  • The Republicans haven't earned the right to stay in power. 8 years ago they got control of all branches of government and instead of governing like the reformers they campaigned as, they behaved like typical politicians and we're now living through the consequences.
  • I have a sense that the Dems, now that they control all 3 branches of government, will learn from the GOP example of "what not to do" and will govern in a way that they won't be tossed out 4 years from now.
  • I love that such a powerful racial barrier has been smashed to smithereens. There are a lot of people today who are in a daze because their core belief system has been turned on its head. In their heart of hearts they truly didn't believe that in the privacy of the voting booth Americans would ACTUALLY vote for a black man. Not only did we, but we did so in record numbers.
  • I think Barack Obama can be a transformational leader. When you combine his intelligence, communication skills, mixed racial heritage, management ability (anybody who can run the kind of campaign operation like he did has serious management chops) with the power of the office of the POTUS, you have the makings of something very special. JFK rose to the occasion. I believe Obama will too.
  • I think (hope and pray) he'll govern from the center, not the far left.
I believe the country chose the right man for this moment in time. I, as a Republican, wish him Godspeed and am behind him 100%.

Hey Larry...I should take a page out of your book and not feel so solemn. The only way that this was the "right" choice for America is if, as you said in your last bullet piont, he governs from the center and not the far left...time will tell...

I am sad that it took this kind of wake up call to have the Republican party take notice. I hope in 4 yrs we will have learned something from his campaign strategy...which was brilliant, by the way.

Larry, I totally agree. I'm neither republican or democrat, but lean republican in views. Humility can be a good thing for change

I agree that Obama could be a transformational leader. Look at the appointment of Hilary Clinton. My god, a politician that actually might be able to utilize some of the best people resources we've got. Amazing.

LG - glad to have you join the good guys (at least in theory). Your post was almost as eloquent (and hopeful) as McCain's concession speech. Let's hope for everyone's sake that you (and the majority of the country) were right!

AR, like McCain I can be well spoken once every election cycle. Truthfully I am excited about the Obama presidency. (Editors Note: Larry was not drinking during this post.)
